I had the pleasure of joining a couple of people from church, including a pastor, for dinner as we convene for the inaugural "Process Your Stuff" meeting, and one bit really stuck with me. The pastor was talking about his mother's passing, and how the pastor who spoke at the funeral said, and I'm paraphrasing, "A lot of you might be asking why, but the better question is what God is using this for".
Another quote, from reading a lot of bible devotionals, stated "The past is a fine place to visit, but it's not a place to live". With my past while focused on moving on from a failed relationship, this is a line that has stuck with me. And with the new addition to my wisdom library, I now know not to focus on why things were, but rather how to use it to refocus myself on God's will.
As humans, and especially as intellectuals, sometimes we get really caught up in the Why. It helps us with a lot of things. Why is the engine making that noise? Why does the door squeak? Why does the prospect need these services? Historical "why"s though, have limited value. You can figure out why, but you have to learn your lesson and move on. Sometimes, you don't even get to figure out why, but you still have to move on.Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
